While abounding in wildlife—mule deer, coyote, cottontail rabbits, porcupines, ground squirrels and red fox—all commonly seen, there are also some black bear, mountain lion and elk. While not residents, they occasionally migrate through. A few rattlesnake dens may exist and are spotted in summer. The golden eagle, Swainson's hawk, Cooper's hawk, red-tailed hawk and prairie falcon make their home here along with many songbirds—truly a birder's paradise.
Elevation can be anywhere from 6,500 feet to 7,800 feet with a population around 11,500. Stunning views of Pikes Peak and the Front Range are part of the everyday scenery. Two very popular parks lie in its midst. Black Forest Regional Park with 240 acres is a county park that contains a large grassy field, playground area, picnicking pavilions, and hiking trails. Fox Run Regional Park, a 320-acre park is famous for its weddings in the gazebo on the water as well as its pleasant recreation facilities.
With its close proximity to Colorado Springs, Black Forest has become a bedroom community with job opportunities found in the Springs. Black Forest is in unincorporated El Paso County and contains no federal or state property, with limited county property. The land lies in the hands of private property owners. Several families have lived in this area for generations making it the solid community that it is today. While there are many five-acre lots there are also larger lots of varying sizes. The Black Forest Community Wildfire Protection Plan actively participates with its residents to prepare fire protection plans for their property.
Connections are easily made with Interstate 25 along county roads (both paved and unpaved) that are well maintained during all seasons of the year. The commercial center for Black Forest has been established at the intersection of Shoup Road and Black Forest Road where the Community Center exists along with the volunteer fire station, churches, a gas station and other small businesses. With its close proximity to Colorado Springs, Black Forest residents can enjoy the amenities of living in quiet, serene, forested surroundings and still maintain the comforts of an urban setting with shopping, restaurants, work, schools, churches, hospitals, health care facilities, recreational facilities, libraries, fitness centers, and so much more all within an easy drive.
Black Forest is served by three school districts: Academy District 20 at www.asd20.org, Falcon District 49 at www.d49.org, and Lewis-Palmer District 38 at www.lewispalmer.org. All of these schools place a high priority on education as the key to success and strive to provide the best possible learning environments for their students. For higher education, the Air Force Academy, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Colorado College, Regis University, Pikes Peak Community College and many commuter colleges are all within a reasonable drive.
There are many properties that are zoned for horses so Black Forest is an equestrian's dream come true. The wide-open spaces and beautiful forested trails allow for plenty of riding time. There is an air of community here; and yet, there is a lot of individuality as well. Home styles range from log cabins to contemporary homes to large estates and everything in between. Home prices range from $200,000 to $1,000,000+.
Black Forest . . . Visit and you'll want to stay!
