The stately Victorian house built in 1876 by the founder of present-day Manitou Springs is named Briarhurst Manor and serves the “Best Colorado Cuisine” in its warm dining atmosphere. Dr. William Bell of London, England originally came to America for medical lectures. His sense of adventure was piqued when an opportunity arose to be a member of a Western surveying team. The job of doctor was already taken so he took a crash course in photography and became the photographer for the trip. The team was headed by William J. Palmer and the rest is history.

A strong friendship between the two Williams turned into a lifelong bond building a corporate empire with a partnership that founded the Denver and Rio Grand Railroad. As Palmer would build Glen Eyrie, Bell would build Briarhurst Manor. Although the original Briarhurst was destroyed in a fire, it was more elaborately built the second time around. Together William and Cara Bell and Briarhurst Manor became the social center of the community.

Because the natural carbonated bubbling springs were considered a cure for many ills in those days, people flocked to Manitou Springs and it became known as the “Saratoga of the West.” Visitors arrived with doctors' prescriptions to drink specific waters as a cure-all for their ills. Beginning in the 1990s there has once again been an interest in the health and spa culture that has brought back the popularity of the springs after years of neglect.

Manitou Springs is home to several world-class, nationally famous historic restaurants serving a wide variety of culinary selections from wild game, to continental to vegetarian. Not only is there elegant dining at Briarhurst Manor, but there is the Cliff House Dining Room winner of the “Best of Elegance”; the Craftwood Inn serving elk, venison, wild boar, pheasant, quail, caribou, ostrich, lamb, steaks and seafood with spectacular views and an intimate fireplace setting being voted “Most Romantic” and “Best Fine Dining”.

In addition to the dining, Manitou Springs is recognized for its fine quality antique and specialty shops. Strolling along its user-friendly downtown offers a plethora of shopping opportunities for gifts and memories to last a lifetime.

Easy access to Highway 24 offers a quick route to Interstate 25 as well as a westward route into the mountains and ski resorts. Colorado City lies directly east with affordable living as well as unique shopping and its Saturday morning summertime Farmer's Markets.

Manitou Springs District 14 offers a comprehensive art, physical education, music, computer tech, and special education program with gifted and talented instructors. The schools have consistently received “high” ratings on Colorado State Accountability Reports. The class size remains small and focused on the individual student. For more information visit their website at wpmu.mssd14.org.

Residential areas are located above the historic tourist area of Manitou Springs and consist of small ranchers and turn-of-the-century Victorians.

Home prices range from the upper $100,000s to $1,000,000+.
