Heading in any direction from Mountain Shadows will take you into special environments of recreational enjoyment. East lies Ute Valley Park with its multi-use trails for mountain bikers, hikers, and runners as well as horseback riders. Mountain climbers enjoy the excellent bouldering on wild sandstone formations. Beginning at the trailhead at Vindicator, the 2.5-mile loop is an easy to moderate trail with an elevation gain of 120 feet.

North of Mountain Shadows sits the Blodgett Peak Open Space with its 167 acres of outdoor hiking. Within the open space's confines resides a bird of prey, the Peregrine Falcon—the fastest flying bird in the world—able to dive at 200 mph. The Peregrine has recently been brought back from extinction.

Heading south, various possibilities present themselves in the privately-owned Glen Eyrie, the free-to-the-public Garden of the Gods, Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site, Red Rocks Park, Old Colorado, Manitou Springs and Highway 24 which whisks up the mountain to the Pikes Peak Highway and Woodland Park as well as the mountains beyond. Garden of the Gods is a Registered National Landmark with a visitor and nature center and is readily accessible with its 15 miles of trails, rock climbing (with a permit), and even horseback tours.

Garden of the Gods Road makes up the southern boundary of Mountain Shadows and is lined with fine restaurants and fast food. Grocery stores are close by. This is a quick access route to Interstate 25 which flows north and south to Denver and downtown Colorado Springs. Living on the northern boundary of Mountain Shadows, Vindicator is an easy drive to Woodmen Road where there are many fine retailers. To the north lies Chapel Hills Mall (with movie theaters) and The Promenade Shops at Briargate. Pine Creek Golf Course is available for your perfection of the game.

To finish the 360-degree recreational fun, due west lies The Flying W Ranch, a working cattle ranch, offering chuckwagon suppers, an old western town with biscuit making and horseshoeing, a cowboy church, and a world-famous stage show of the Flying W Wranglers—a highlight of anyone's visit to Colorado Springs. It is just minutes into the mountains from Mountain Shadows.

Trailblazer and Chipeta Elementary educate younger children graduating into Holmes Middle School and on to Coronado High School, all fine District 11 high-performing schools.
