Sitting at 6,230 feet above sea level and built in the early 20th century as the “Grand Dame of the Rockies,” The Broadmoor Hotel was one of the finest resort destinations along the Rocky Mountains during the age of railroads. Today it remains a popular conference destination for businessmen and government officials. It offers a tennis facility rated #3 by Tennis Magazine. With its world-renown golf courses, the East Course has hosted numerous USGA championships—most recently the 2008 U.S. Senior Open.

Born in 1891 as a gambling casino and transformed into a “grand resort” in 1918, The Broadmoor continues to shine brightly as one of the world's premier resorts. On May 9, 1916, Spencer Penrose, an entrepreneur from Philadelphia and his wife, Julie, purchased the 40-acre site of The Broadmoor Casino and Hotel and an adjoining 400 acres with an objective of creating the most beautiful resort in the world. Penrose and his design team imported artisans who crafted elaborate interior and exterior details fashioned after the opulence and elegance that the Penrose's had experienced in Europe and the Orient. On June 29, 1918, the Broadmoor officially opened with four wings and a striking pink stucco facade. Longevity of service in the resort's history attests to the “quality of life” for employees as well as guests.

Shortly after the hotel opened, the first residential communities began to evolve close to this Colorado Springs jewel known as The Broadmoor. People were drawn to the area by its natural beauty, the peaceful serenity drawn from the breathtaking mountains so nearby as well as the “natural” Colorado lifestyle. Deer roam freely in the meadows living peacefully with their human neighbors. Access to hiking trails in Cheyenne Cañon as well as the Stratton Open Space and Cheyenne Mountain State Park are all in close proximity.

Cheyenne Mountain School District 12 serves this exclusive neighborhood. The district has a total enrollment of approximately 4,600 students in preschool through 12th grade. There are a total of five elementary schools, one junior high school and a high school in addition to a charter school serving grades K-6. Close to the top of all schools in Colorado and the nation in academic achievement, is the result of students who come to school ready to learn, strong parent and community participation and support, and outstanding teachers, administrators, and a board of education who are committed to providing an environment conducive to all aspects of learning. Approximately 90 percent of graduates go on to college, many in the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation. For more information visit: www.cmsd.kiz.co.us.

One of Spencer Penrose's lifelong interest was in animals. Given a bear in 1916, that bear was the beginning of an exotic animal collection that Penrose added to every year. As Penrose's collection grew, he kept the animals at his ranch and at The Broadmoor Hotel. By 1926, Penrose started the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo which eventually became home to his animals as well as many more additions. Today, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo continues to expand and its attractions draw thousands of people each year to its well-maintained exhibits.

Along with the zoo ticket comes a trip up the mountain to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. Spencer Penrose was so pleased with The Broadmoor Hotel that in 1937 he completed a nearby monument for him and his wife Julie's tomb which takes the rather novel form of an 80-foot hilltop observation tower overlooking the resort. Persuaded not to name the structure after himself, it is instead called the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun honoring Penrose's friend who died in a plane crash in 1935 during construction of the tomb.

Living in this historic, wealthy, and uniquely fashionable district of Colorado Springs can add a measure of charm and prestige to your lifestyle. Large lots and multi-million dollar mansions give the area a feel of one of the priciest neighborhoods in the region. Boasting a variety of homes both in size and age, The Broadmoor area is THE place to live in Colorado Springs. Home prices range from $400,000s to $8,000,000.

The Broadmoor . . . For Your Lifestyle!
