The mountains rise abruptly behind Skyway allowing North Cheyenne Cañon to cut 1,000 feet deep into the ageless granite. This 1,600-acre park offers beautiful waterfalls, rock formations, wildflowers, wildlife, picnic areas and hiking trails This park was a donation to the city of Colorado Springs by founder, General William Jackson Palmer. Bear Creek Regional Park is within walking distance of many of the homes in the Skyway area. Within the park is the nature center, a dog park, picnic areas, and miles of user-friendly trails. The nature center is located at the west end of the park. Within the park are scrub oak thickets, Cottonwood riparian communities, ponderosa pine forests, meadows, a creek and protected wildlife species. Interpretive programs, special events, guided and self-guided tours, and media presentations are offered all year.
School District 12 serves the Skyway area where 90 percent of the Cheyenne Mountain High School graduates attend colleges and universities with $11 million in scholarships offered. District 12 has been the highest performing school district in Colorado, based on the Colorado Department of Education's ranking of CSAP performance since 2006.
